In the Know on Spider Lake

SLPOA MEMBERSHIP HELPS YOU LEARN HOW to PROTECT SPIDER LAKE and ABOUT EVENTS HAPPENING in OUR LAKE COMMUNITY and BEYOND

THANK YOU for being a Spider Lake Property Owners Association (SLPOA) ENEWS Supporter.  As a supporting member, you have received some of the SLPOA ENEWS over the last year.  The SLPOA Board hopes you found them informative, helpful, and/or enjoyable. The primarily goals of SLPOA ENEWS are to share factual information that supports best practices for protecting Spider Lake and its shorelands, community happenings and events, especially those that may impact Spider Lake, as well as SLPOA events and actions, etc.

As Spider Lake riparians, the lake is our shared backyard. What one riparian does or does not do on their property or in the water may effect all of us. When an invasive species like Phragmites or Purple Loosestrife grows on one shoreline, its seeds will spread and infest adjacent shorelines.  A malfunctioning septic system may leach affluent (waste water) with human excrements, phosphorous, pollutants, and/or bacterial pathogens into the ground water (including our wells) and/or the surface water (our lake). Excess septic nutrients - especially phosphorous - can cause algal blooms that effect swimming, boating, etc.  Some algal blooms can be toxic, kill waterfowl, and pets and/or threaten human health. SLPOA works to find the best solutions to such problems and the SLPOA ENEWS shares those SLPOA actions, along with actions individual riparians may take.

The new SLPOA fiscal year begins this summer.  Please consider becoming a SLPOA member.  Watch for upcoming ENEWS and other communications about how to become a member.  As a SLPOA member, you support the association's work to protect Spider Lake - our beloved recreational and environmental gem.  Studies show that waterfront property values are closely linked to its water quality.

 IN THE WORKS

At the SLPOA 2024 Annual Meeting, plans were shared for ongoing actions and added projects.  Two vital ongoing actions involve work by the Water Quality Committee, i.e. yearly water testing and work to "Spot, Stop, and Mitigate" invasive species.  Last summer, additional water testing for some coves was added to the standard testing regimen and this summer three Boat Wash Blitz events will inform those boat launch users about the laws and recommendations to avoid spreading invasive species via water vessels and equipment. Some of the added projects for the 2024 - 2025 fiscal year include the following:

  1. SLPOA 30th Anniversary Celebration - host a gathering to socially engage & celebrate

  2. SLPOA Welcome Packet - develop and distribute to new riparians

  3. Dues Payments - add an electronic method for dues payment, in addition to current cash and check options

  4. SLPOA Website - explore the possibility of creating a website to better communicate with members and others

  5. SLPOA By-laws - review and possibly update

  6. Outreach & Connections - monitor local community events, municipal actions, i.e. road maintenance, former Camp Greilick property updates, new township ordinances, etc.

Look for details about those ongoing and added projects in upcoming ENEWS and/or at the annual meeting.
