Water Quality

Activities:

  • Collects lake water samples to monitor our water quality for the Michigan’s Cooperative Lakes Monitoring Program (CLMP). Results and trends are reviewed at each SLPOA Annual Meeting and in ENEWS. Tests include:

  • water clarity (weekly)

  • total phosphorus sampling (Spring and Fall)

  • Chlorophyll A (biweekly)

  • Water column temperature (biweekly)

  • Dissolved oxygen (biweekly)

  • Monitors for invasive plants at the shoreline and in the water, and encourages and assists with the eradication of these plants.

    • Monitors for aquatic Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM is currently not in Spider Lake)

    • Purple Loosestrife (PL) is a very prolific invasive plant growing around our shoreline.  The control program includes:

      • Distributing purchased beetles and larvae in select areas around the lake.  The beetles exclusively eat PL.

      • Manual flower head removal with proper disposal.  One plant can produce over a million seeds!

      • Manual removal of reachable plants with proper disposal.

      • Consulting and assisting lakeshore owners regarding PL control and removal

    • Monitors for other invasive shoreline plants, such as Phragmites (tall perennial grasses that can take over a shoreline), Yellow Flag Iris, and Creeping Jenny, as well as invasive aquatic plants.

  • Monitors for invasive critters and encourages and assists with the eradication of these.

  • Supplies boater information at the boat launch.  See the Spider Lake Map and Rules sheet (add link)

  • Exploring boat cleaning options to help prevent the spread of invasive species

  • Coordinates with volunteers for trash clean-up of Island 3 and nearshore trash removal via boat and paddleboard.

Membership Relations

Committee Activities

  1. Oversees communications to members and, in some cases non-members, of the Association via Facebook, ENEWS, SLPOA’s website, mail, in-person, and any other means.

    • Communications can include education, awareness, issues, historical information, advertise and promote the associations activities, and to achieve maximum membership potential, etc.

  2. Administers and monitors the Spider Lake Facebook group.

  3. Maintains the Association website.

  4. Sends periodic electronic newsletters (ENEWS), USPS mailings, as well as posts information on Facebook.

  5. Updates the Welcome Packet as needed. Monitors for new owners and coordinates distribution of Welcome Packets.

Fisheries

  1. To promote fishing;

  2. Study and monitor fish stocking;

  3. Fish habitat improvement

  4. Study and seek improvement of regulations that affect fishing

  5. to confer with and seek the assistance of the DNR to improve fishing.

Water Safety Committee

Committee Activities

  1. Communicate water safety education information

  2. Monitor for and communicate changes to Michigan Boating Laws

  3. Work with the Grand Traverse County Marine Division to represent Spider Lake in water safety regulations.

Finance Committee

Committee Activities

  1. Collects and processes annual dues.

  2. Collects and reports membership data.

  3. Recommends annual budget and assessments if appropriate

  4. Reviews needs for, and sources of income.

  5. Presents budget report at Board meetings and Annual meeting.

  6. Collects and updates property ownership data.
