PREVENT THE SPREAD OF AQUATIC INVASIVE SPECIES (AIS) – IT’S THE LAW

Michigan’s Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act (Act 451 of 1994) Part 413 has been amended with changes for boaters and anglers that are in effect as of March 21, 2019. In part, the law makes it illegal to place a boat, its trailer and other equipment in the Michigan’s waters with aquatic plants attached and/or water, plants, and/or AIS remaining in the equipment.

Midwest Invasive Species Network

  • Inspect and remove aquatic plants, animals and mud from your watercraft, trailer, water shoes and all equipment.

  • Drain all water from equipment (watercraft, trailer, water shoes, and all equipment). Pull all plugs.

  • Dispose of all unwanted bait and fish in the trash, NOT in the water

  • Wash your watercraft and equipment with hot water or a pressure washer, prior to visiting new waters

  • Dry (alternative to wash) your watercraft & all equipment thoroughly in the sun for 10 days, prior to visiting a new site
